Jewish Liturgy as Local Environmental Activism: A Prayer for the Monsoon
Dr. Daniel Stein Kokin discusses and performs his original "prayer for the monsoon" based loosely on the traditional tefilat ha-geshem (prayer for rain) and other traditional Jewish liturgical texts. This prayer for the Southwest Monsoon responds to the recent decline of the meteorological phenomenon typically responsible for 30–40 percent of Arizona's annual precipitation. Dr. Stein Kokin's presentation is followed by a response from Prof. Hava Tirosh-Samuelson, Director of Jewish Studies and Irving and Miriam Lowe Professor of Modern Judaism at Arizona State University, who will explore the intersection of Jewish thought, liturgy, localism, and environmentalism.
