The Great Shift: People Centered Emergency Management to Improve Community Resilience
Join us for a talk with Dan Neely, the Community Resilience manager at the Emergency Management Office of the Wellington Region in New Zealand. He will share practical ways to building community resilience in New Zealand. Almost ten years in the making, this new model transformed the Emergency Management sector’s relationships with their local communities. Shifting from command-and-control to communicate-and-collaborate around community-driven local solutions, Emergency Managers support communities in increasing connectedness, cooperation, innovation and placemaking. The goal is for communities to function well every day, not just during and after an emergency event. As such, Dan’s talk is of interest to various city departments, as he shows how Emergency Management integrates indigenous knowledge and practices that connect with sustainability, planning, economic development, neighborhood services and more.
